Equitech Products - Tough Hoof

The Equitech Hoof Toughening Gel  - Hoofs Tuff is similar to other hoof hardening agents but with the addition of a more stable cross linking agent. The product is called Hoofs Tuff as this is what it does - helps to produces a tough non brittle hoof. The drier the hoof the better when applying as it makes tighter cross links and a stronger hoof. Our horses live out with a barn for shelter and feeding, so, when it's wet it's wet. As they have good feet they dry out quite quickly once in the barn but the soles take the longest drying time.

Here's how I use Hoof's Tuff:

  1. Have the horse on a dry surface.
  2. Brush off excess mud.
  3. Pick out the sole, frog and frog clefts and dry with a rag.
  4. Having done all four feet as in (3) I use a stiff wire brush to clean the now dry hoof wall & sole.
  5. Hoofs Tuff is applied using the supplied brush as a 'dosing' method, 1 or 2 brush loads per foot and then work in with a small stiff pasting brush, over wall, sole and frog. I find this technique keeps the gel clean as I never put the stiff brush which is usually dirty into the Hoofs Tuff bottle.
  6. That's it done (x4 of course)
I have no problems applying Hoof's Tuff to the frogs of our barefoot horses feet. It seems to make the frog very tough and free from thrush type infections.
After a barefoot trim I apply Hoof's Tuff three times in the next 4 days following the trim then once a week after.
If I have a ride planned I apply the Hoof's Tuff 4 times in the 7 days prior to the ride.
