This is how we modified Omar's saddle so that no damage occurs
to the lump on his back no matter what the distance he's ridden.

2 x 100km rides within 6 days and there is no damage to his back!

Omar's Story:

It all began back in early 2000, when my horse Wrightfield Omar had a single long hair on his back under the saddle. Stupidly one day I pulled it out. After a while a tiny pin head lump appeared, which over time grew steadily to a smallish lump that resembled a wart. I did what I could to protect it - was very careful only to ride in wool numnahs, and had his conventional GP saddle fitted with air filled panels. Sadly though, as we increased the distances in 2002, Omar developed hollows behind his shoulders, resulting in his saddle (which he had worn since 1995) pressing down on his withers. I purchased a FnE saddle in 2002, and found it so comfortable I had to have another one for my other horse! The hollows filled out on Omars back, and from that point of view all was now well.

However, over the years the lump became much larger. Its proper name is a well established granuloma, and to attempt to remove it would cause more harm than good. It was interesting to see that each year, when Omar had his 14 week winter holiday, the granuloma became raised and when work commenced it flatted out again, due to the weight on his back. Nevertheless the granuloma got rubbed, and would quite often bleed on the longer distances. This was not causing Omar any pain at all, but provided an interesting topic of conversation for the vets.

Last year at Lindum I saw FnE's new memory foam leather panels and decided to purchase them for Omar's saddle. Les kindly fitted these at the ride and we did the 169km over 3 days very successfully. But it was after the ride that the big change took place. At Les' suggestion I sent him a template of the granuloma and and he then made a leather panel with a cut-away around the granuloma. The result has been fantastic. There is completly no rubbing at all and I am highly delighted.

Thank-you very much Free'n'Easy saddles.
