Measurements: dorsal wall angle in degrees, dorsal wall length - first row before ride, second row after ride.
Measurement accuracy: angle +/- 1.0deg, length +/- 0.125"
Interesting points to note: Ellie loads the lateral side on both front feet - in trimming I often remove extra material from the medial side to correct the M/L balance. Other than filing the 'mustang roll' the hoof walls have not been touched with a file.
History notes: The LF was very badly affected by white line disease on the lateral side 5 yrs ago. So much so that the the lateral side was pushed in towards the centre of the foot. The LH lateral bar was also pushed under the lateral edge of the frog and the lateral wall had a very distinct 'ear' and a M/L unbalanced coffin joint.
Download a Lotus 123 or Microsoft Excel file with a record of Ellie's foot measurements from start of 2004 to date.
I am working on the downloadable Spread Sheet files so that they can be used to graph your horses progress to a better foot. When the forces on the foot are correctly balanced wear will be even over the whole of the foot. This means that from trim to trim the dorsal wall angle will remain the same and the amount trimmed off the toe will reduce. You will find it necessary to trim the whole solar surface to keep an optimum hoof length of about 31/4".
